A trio of attractive one-bedroom apartments (for 2), steps from the Cathedral and the river, in Antwerp's historic centre

Antwerp is considered by many to be Belgium's most interesting city for its enticing mix of old and new. Long renowned for being a major financial hub, the Diamond Capital also flexes with its influence on art, design and fashion, particularly since the 1980s. To discover its many delights, the best place to start is from a prime location in the historic centre, like at these chic suites.

Conceived and curated by the team behind the chic Antwerp Boutique Suites, the apartments are found in a tall, acutely angled corner building with views of the square and the Cathedral of our Lady to one side, and the River Scheldt beyond on the other. Interiors are warm and comfortable with parquet floors and neutral tones, and big windows allowing light to pour in. Each of the three one-bedroom suites comes with useful amenities, such as a coffee corner for light snacks and hot drinks; one has a private terrace, and there are cute attributes from pot plants to Spotify playlists, sheepskin cushions and eclectic vintage finds. We think they're perfect for couples on a cultural city break, and we can't wait to try them out for size ourselves.

Highs

    • An excellent central location, just metres from Antwerp Cathedral, the river, restaurants, shops and sights
    • Lovely chic interiors, with a retro vibe and fun details
    • The attention to detail throughout, such as blackout curtains, good quality tea and coffee, bathrobes and books to browse
    • The suites are serviced daily and are well-maintained
    • Antwerp itself is a fascinating city, worth taking more than a couple of days to discover

Lows

    • No cooking facilities in the suites, so you'll need to head out for meals
    • No twin beds or extra beds; these are aimed at couples, not families
    • Only Suite 2 has a private terrace
    • As with all city apartments you'll need to be prepared for some ambient noise

Best time to go

The Old Cornmarket Hideaways are open year-round, as is Antwerp. The busiest months are usually May to August: the Port Festival is in May, while the Film Festival is in June, and there's a Beer Festival in August and October that sees the Book Fair. Spring and autumn are the best for warmer temperatures yet fewer crowds.

Our top tips

The architecture of Antwerp is marvellously diverse. Its long history and wealthy past is seen in spruced-up medieval streets and beautiful and intricate Art Nouveau buildings. Post-war, the city has seen regeneration schemes and modernist buildings by Starchitects, including Zaha Hadid and Richard Rogers; the MAS Maritime Museum is an example of post-modern Art Deco architecture. Even Central Station is worth a look, considered one of the most impressive in Europe for its Beaux-Arts style.

Rooms

Each of the three suites has a similar formula - one bedroom (with queensize double bed), sitting area, shower bathroom, kitchen corner - arranged in a contemporary open-plan aesthetic within this historic timbered building. There are wooden floors, white walls, pot plants, and textures by way of sheepskin throws or natural fibre rugs. You get stylish bathrooms with walk-in showers, a hanging rail for your clothes, light flooding in from large windows, and views of Oude Koornmarkt square.

They differ in details: top floor Suite 3, the smallest, has exposed original ceiling beams, the best views of the Cathedral, and its bathroom is a couple of steps down and around from the bedroom. Both Suite 1 on the first floor and Suite 2 on the second have high ceilings, and living areas separated from the bedroom areas by a curtain and some steps; bathrooms are tucked behind the bedrooms. These two look towards the River Scheldt, best seen from Suite 2's private terrace. Note that bathrooms don't come with doors, if privacy is an issue for you.

For stocking up on snacks and breakfast items, there are a couple of food shops, including a Carrefour Express within a 5-minute walk.

It is likely that you'll be eating out for the majority of your time in Antwerp, and your hosts can recommend an array of options from Michelin-starred cuisine (there are a few to choose from, including t'Fornius) to plant-based fare, as well as Mexican, moules frites in the Theatre district, casual diners for breakfast and lunch, and Asian small plates. For drinks, there are juice shops, cocktail bars and coffee shops galore.

By Air:

Antwerp's Central Station is well connected to most points in northern Europe by rail, and via the Eurostar from London (change in Brussels). The station is about 30 minutes away on foot, less by taxi or tram; most will arrive by train.

By Car:
We only recommend a car if you’re planning to explore Belgium; you don’t need one if you’re coming to Antwerp for a short break. For car hire, see our car rental recommendations.
