The owner of this characterful hideaway has an excellent eye for the unusual. As a Creative Director, Sandy spent decades globe-trotting and collecting, and longed for a place to renovate and to showcase her curios and collectables. After a long search, this 19th-century engine house came up trumps, and she and an architect friend set about reimagining the bare bones into a unique contemporary home, with a strong sustainable ethos including salvaged roof tiles. There are three double bedrooms and two bathrooms across two storeys, with re-cycled and up-cycled furnishings. These sit alongside a vast open kitchen with interesting vintage tableware, a reclaimed tile floor and double-height ceiling. Picture windows to one side flood it with light. We loved the giant plaster foot by the garden doors, which lead out to the pretty private walled garden that gets plenty of sun all day despite its large walls. The house is cosy in winter, bright inside, and great for indoor-outdoor living in the summer.
Tucked away down a little lane in an unassuming village 3 miles from Bury St Edmunds, you're in striking distance of inspiring restaurants and ancient medieval wool villages, with Cambridge 45 minutes away, and picturesque coastal towns an hour's drive. The house is set in a quiet residential area, so is best suited for folk looking for a peaceful getaway to read, rest and explore the region.
