Leave space in your schedule to simply be on the estate – sunrise and sunset from your terrace or the infinity pool are pretty magical, and the light is exceptional for photography. Pack proper walking shoes for the park and surrounding trails. For surf, conditions change daily (hourly) so ask the team which nearby beaches suit your timings.

All 54 rooms and suites are about understated comfort and design – nothing showy, just well-considered spaces that make it easy to slow down and settle in. The feel is contemporary but warm, finished with natural stone, wood and soft, earthy tones that match the surrounding landscape. Large windows and sliding doors open onto private balconies, terraces or garden spaces, complete with put-your-feet-up-and-stay-awhile loungers for starting – or ending – the day with some obligatory sea- or star-gazing.
The rooms are generously sized, with canopy-style, kingsize beds, enormous walk-in rain showers and refined marble bathrooms. Heated towel rails, Elemis toiletries, and extra-fluffy bathrobes and slippers are just some of the generous extras. Choose from Premium Rooms with Private Balconies – where we stayed – or Suites with Garden Terraces and direct outdoor access, or Premium Suites with Sky Terraces. At the top end, the Signature Suites have their own rooftop terraces and plunge pools and the Two-bedroom Garden Suites include a private garden and plunge pool.

Eating
Food here is appropriately rooted in place and season. At Azeitona restaurant, it's modern Portuguese cooking with a twist, proudly sourced and built around fresh, regional produce. Think Monchique cabbage, Aljezur sweet potato and Algarvian carrots – alongside well-sourced fish and meat – we thought there were limited options for vegans or vegetarians. The massa mãe sourdough, and bacalhau à Brás is a must. Everything is underpinned by excellent Portuguese olive oils, herbs and a wine list that stays entirely local, from the Douro down to the Algarve.
Breakfast is a highlight, and happily unhurried (it’s open until 12pm – a joy for late sleepers). The buffet feels almost endless, with freshly baked croissants and pastel de natas, local honey and butter, Portuguese cheeses, yoghurt and fruit platters, plus specialty teas and great coffee. Cooked dishes are made to order – eggs benedict with microgreens is a favourite.
Enjoy lighter poolside plates by day, and candlelit dinners by night, best followed by a drink at Medronho Bar – a cosy end to the evening.

- Build in a spa circuit during your stay, there's a heated indoor pool, hammam and two saunas (including a 90ºC Finnish version), plus a gym. The Esteva Spa has an extensive menu of facials, scrubs, wraps and massages, and uses Elemis products. There's a yoga and Pilates terrace too, yoga sessions are available 6 days a week
