A pair of artisanal cottages (for 2-4) in Sardinia's rural south, where back-to-nature bliss meets locally inspired design

Nestled in a secluded valley in southern Sardinia, Luxi Bia (pronounced LOO-zhee BEE-uh) offers a simple return to nature in surprising style. Remnants of 19th-century farmhouses have been sensitively restored and reimagined by Kyre and Ivano, a couple of design aficionados who were drawn to the unique, heritage-rich culture on the island. Original beams and salvaged stone now form the bones of two chic 1- & 2-bedroom cottages. Behind the unassuming facades, find interiors plucked from the pages of design mags, dripping in vintage furnishings and one-of-a-kind artisan pieces inspired by the local surroundings.

Rooms are bright, spacious and comfortable. Gorgeous kitchens make self-catering a pleasure, while a basket loaded with breakfast goodies can be provided to get you settled straight in. When you want to stock up or eat out, Santadi (a 5-minute drive) is home to bakeries, grocers and popular local osterie. Your knowledgeable hosts can help you discover this authentic and wild corner of the island, known for prehistoric archaeological sites and rugged rural landscapes. Venture a little further for the coast, with turquoise seas and stunning white beaches that are far less crowded than those in the north. Then return to your quiet countryside retreat, shrouded in ancient olive trees and scented with herbs. These cottages make a fabulous base for couples exploring hidden Sardinia, with minimal frills and maximum comfort.

Rooms

Each cottage is a beautiful restoration of a once crumbling ruin. As many of the original features and materials as possible have been reclaimed, from the strong juniper ceiling beams to the old facade stones repurposed as the garden walls. Fragrant herbs are planted around the courtyards, which are enclosed by ancient olive trees. Inside, rooms are decked out in achingly cool vintage and handcrafted furnishings, making them spaces you'll want to linger in.

La Residenza is a gorgeous couple's escape, tucked away into the hillside and very private. Beneath pitched caned ceilings, there's a good size double bedroom with an ensuite shower room, a sitting room with a cosy wood-burner, a full kitchen and romantic dining nook for two. Out front there's a shaded patio where you can lounge, eat, and soak up the silence.

A stone's throw across the grounds, Casa Corte is a stylish hideaway for four. The two ensuite double bedrooms offer friends or couples travelling together ample privacy, and they lead into a large open-plan living and dining room. The sleek wine-red kitchen is tucked behind a partition wall, and glass doors lead into a courtyard shrouded by olive trees. Its north-facing position means it stays pleasantly cool, so you can make the most of the wild surroundings. Note that both beds are doubles, so friends or teens will need to be happy sharing a bed.

Tech is kept to a minimum, so there are no TVs - you're encouraged to reconnect with nature here. That said, there are bluetooth speakers and if you bring your own devices you can use the WiFi to stream to your heart's content, plus air-con and heating are installed for your comfort.

Features include:

  • Air conditioning
  • Beach towels
  • Bluetooth sound system
  • Coffee / tea making
  • Fireplace
  • Hairdryer
  • Mosquito net
  • Terrace/balcony
  • Toiletries
  • Washing machine
  • WiFi

Eating

Both cottages have modern, fully equipped kitchens for self-catering, and you can opt for a basket of breakfast ingredients to be waiting on your arrival. This might include fresh fruit and bread, yogurt, jam, ricotta (if in season) and coffee. Casa Corte also has a barbecue if you want to take dinner alfresco.

The closest shops are in Santadi (a 5-minute drive), which has a supermarket, bakeries (fresh bread baked daily in a wood-fired oven), butchers (homemade salami and roast suckling pig upon request), fruit and veggie shops with local produce. There's also a fishmonger who comes through daily with his catch from the port of Sant'Antioco. As in most of rural Italy, almost all of the small shops are closed on Sundays. Santadi also has a few well-rated restaurants if you fancy dining out, including a popular pizzeria.

Features include:

  • Breakfast
  • Coffee maker
  • Dishwasher
  • Fridge
  • Full kitchen
  • Hob or stove
  • Oven
